threshold workout

2x 6min Threshold

This Friday Fast Track session is a classic threshold workout with just enough bite to make it meaningful — without tipping into fatigue. By extending the work intervals and allowing a slightly longer recovery, this session encourages strong, repeatable efforts that translate beautifully to parkrun pacing and confidence.

💥 Today’s Workout

Warm-Up

  • 10 minutes at Level II (easy, relaxed running)

Main Set

  • 2 × 6 minutes at Level IV (threshold effort)
  • 2 minutes at Level II recovery jog after each rep

Cool-Down

  • 10 minutes at Level II

Post-Run

  • 10 minutes gentle stretching

🎯 Why This Works for parkrun

Threshold work is the backbone of effective 5K training. This session focuses on longer, controlled efforts that help you settle into — and stay with — a demanding pace. For parkrunners, it delivers:

  • Improved ability to sustain strong effort
  • Better pacing judgement under fatigue
  • Increased resistance to mid-race slowdown
  • Stronger aerobic conditioning
  • Confidence in holding pace through the second half of a parkrun

The longer recovery allows you to maintain quality while still accumulating meaningful time at threshold.

🧠 How It Should Feel

  • Firm and challenging, but sustainable
  • Breathing is strong and purposeful
  • You’re aware of the effort, but in control
  • The second rep should feel tough — not frantic

If the first rep feels easy, resist the urge to push harder. Consistency matters more than speed.

🔥 Coach’s Tip

Focus on even pacing across both intervals. The goal is to finish the second rep feeling just as composed as the first. Imagine locking into your parkrun rhythm at the 1km mark and refusing to let it slip — this session teaches exactly that skill.
