What Happens at Your First parkrun? A Step-by-Step Guide from Arrival to Results

You’ve registered.

You’ve got your barcode saved on your phone.

You’ve chosen your local event.

You’ve read about how to prepare.

Now there’s just one question left:

What actually happens when I arrive?

For many first-timers, this is the biggest source of uncertainty.

The good news is that parkrun is incredibly simple.

Once you’ve experienced it once, you’ll realise there’s very little to worry about.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through exactly what happens at your first parkrun, from the moment you arrive through to receiving your results later that day.

Arriving at parkrun

Ideally, arrive around 15-20 minutes before the start.

This gives you enough time to:

  • Find parking
  • Locate the start area
  • Use the toilets
  • Attend the First Timers Welcome
  • Relax and settle in

One of the best things you can do is simply stand back for a moment and observe.

You’ll notice people of all ages and abilities.

Some are warming up.

Some are chatting with friends.

Some are walking around with a coffee.

Others are standing quietly, probably feeling exactly the same nerves you’re feeling.

The atmosphere is usually much more relaxed than most first-timers expect.

Finding the First Timers Welcome

Many events hold a First Timers Welcome briefing shortly before the main briefing.

If you’re attending your first parkrun, this is highly recommended.

The volunteer leading the briefing will explain:

  • The course layout
  • Any hazards
  • Where to go after finishing
  • Event-specific information
  • Anything first-timers should know

You’ll often discover you’re not the only newcomer.

In fact, most weeks there are multiple first-time participants.

The Main Briefing

A few minutes before the start, everyone gathers for the main briefing.

This usually includes:

  • Volunteer acknowledgements
  • Safety reminders
  • Milestone celebrations
  • Course notices
  • Visitor welcomes

Listen carefully, especially if there are any temporary course changes or safety instructions.

After the briefing, participants move toward the start line.

    The Start

When the Run Director is ready, you’ll hear a simple countdown.

    Then everyone starts moving.

    That’s it.

    No starting gun.

    No complicated procedures.

    No special requirements.

Just hundreds of people heading off together.

One of the biggest mistakes first-timers make is starting too fast.

Try to begin at a comfortable pace.

The excitement can make the first few hundred metres feel very easy.

    Trust me.

Your future self will thank you for being patient.

    During the parkrun

As you move around the course you’ll notice something interesting.

    Not everyone is running.

    Some participants are:

    • Walking
    • Using run/walk strategies
    • Pushing prams
    • Running with friends
    • Taking photos
    • Simply enjoying the experience

    This is completely normal.

parkrun is not just for runners.

It’s for anyone who wants to complete the 5km course.

Volunteers will often cheer you on as you pass.

Take a moment to thank them if you can.

The event simply wouldn’t happen without them.

    Approaching the Finish

As you near the finish line, keep following the signs and volunteer instructions.

Once you cross the finish line, your finishing position is recorded.

But you’re not quite finished yet.

    The Finish Funnel

The finish funnel is often the part that confuses first-timers most.

    Fortunately, it’s very simple.

    After crossing the finish line:

    • Keep moving forward
    • Stay in order
    • Follow volunteer instructions

    Don’t leave the funnel early.

Don’t swap places with other participants.

    Just keep moving forward.

The system works beautifully when everyone stays in sequence.

    Collecting Your Finish Token

At the end of the funnel, a volunteer will hand you a finish token.

This token contains your finishing position.

You’ll need it for the next step.

A common beginner mistake is accidentally taking the token home.

    Please don’t.

The finish tokens belong to the event and are reused every week.

    Barcode Scanning

Now it’s time to have your result recorded.

    A volunteer will scan:

    1. Your finish token
    2. Your personal barcode

This links your finishing position with your registration profile.

Once this is done, you’re officially finished.

    Congratulations.

    You’ve completed your first parkrun.

What Happens If Something Goes Wrong?

    Don’t worry.

    Volunteers are incredibly helpful.

    Common situations include:

    Forgot Your Barcode

    You can still participate.

You just won’t receive an official result.

    Accidentally Left the Funnel

    Speak to a volunteer.

They’ll do their best to help.

    Unsure What to Do

    Ask.

Volunteers answer these questions every week.

    After the Event

Many participants head to a nearby café after parkrun.

This is one of the hidden benefits of the event.

    You get to:

    • Meet other participants
    • Chat with volunteers
    • Celebrate achievements
    • Become part of the community

Some people arrive knowing nobody and leave having made several new friends.

    Receiving Your Results

Later that day, you’ll receive your official result.

This usually arrives via email and appears on the parkrun website & app.

    Your result includes:

    • Finish time
    • Overall position
    • Gender position
    • Age grading percentage
    • Personal best information
    • Total number of parkruns completed

For your first event, don’t worry too much about the numbers.

The biggest achievement is simply showing up.

Why Your Second parkrun Feels Easier

One of the most common things I hear from first-timers is:

    “I can’t believe I was so nervous.”

That’s because most of the anxiety comes from uncertainty.

    Once you’ve attended one event:

    • You know where to park
    • You know how the briefing works
    • You know what the finish funnel looks like
    • You know how scanning works
    • You know you can complete the course

    Everything feels easier.

And that’s often when people begin building a genuine parkrun habit.

The Real Goal of Your First parkrun

Your first parkrun isn’t about setting a personal best.

    It’s not about finishing position.

It’s not even about the stopwatch.

It’s about proving to yourself that you can show up.

Once you’ve done that, everything else becomes possible.

    The second parkrun becomes easier.

    The third becomes familiar.

    The tenth becomes routine.

And before long, you’ll wonder how Saturday mornings ever looked any different.
